Wyatt Smith Music

Wyatt Smith, a native of Rapid City, SD, is currently a graduate student at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, studying organ performance with Martin Jean and improvisation with Jeffrey Brillhart. He is member of the American Guild of Organists, Organ Historical Society, Music Teachers National Association and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. He hold the Colleague and Service Playing Certificates from the AGO. Wyatt began piano studies at the age of seven and organ studies at the age of ten. His teachers have included Mary Free, Bethel Zabell, Justin Matters, Marylou Torrey and Douglas Cleveland. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance from the University of South Dakota, graduating magna cum laude. At USD, Wyatt was a student of Larry Schou. He has also studied improvisation with Tom Trenney, and fortepiano with Susanne Skyrm. As a performer, Wyatt has concertized extensively throughout the United States of America. Notable venues include the US Air Force Protestant Cadet Chapel in Colorado Springs, Colorado; First Plymouth Church UCC in Lincoln, Nebraska; St. Andrew's Cathedral in Honolulu, Hawaii; Jewett Auditorium - College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho; St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, Washington; Spreckels Organ Pavilion - Balboa Park in San Diego, California; National City Christian Church in Washington, D. C.; King's Chapel in Boston, Massachusetts; Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, California; Overture Concert Hall in Madison, Wisconsin and as a Rising Star at the 2012 AGO National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee among many other venues. Wyatt has a deep passion for commissioning and performing new works written for the organ. Has has commissioned and premiered works by composers that include Emma Lou Diemer, Lynn Petersen, Kristina Langlois, David Cherwien, Kurt Knecht, Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra, Deanna Wehrspann and Carson Cooman.  Wyatt was the winner of the 2011 AGO/Quimby Regional Competition for Young Organists (North Central Region) held in Des Moines, Iowa. He was among the winners of the 2011 USD Concerto Competition. His performances have been heard on several episodes of American Public Media's Pipedreams, along with South Dakota Public Radio and Television.
