Winter Journey, D. 911 (Winterreise) is a song cycle for voice and piano by Franz Schubert. It is the second of Schubert's two grand song cycles based on Müller's poems, the first being Die schöne Müllerin, D. 795. Winterreise was written and published in two parts, both as Op. 89 in 1828, and, though the original version was written for tenor, it is customary to transpose the music to suite other voices, with the precedent being set by Schubert humself. Müller died before he could hear any music Schubert crafted from his poems. Both song cycles have exerted and enourmous influence on the genre, becoming fixed items in most singers' repertoires, and posing complex interpretative demands on both listeners and performers due to their grand scale and structural coherence.
