The Roman Carnival Overture (Le carnaval romain ouverture pour orchestra), Op. 9 was composed in 1844 and first performed that same year in Salle Herz, Paris. A stand alone overture intended for concert performance, it was made from materials from Benvenuto Cellini, including some music from opera's carnival scene - hence the title. It is scored for large orchestra, featuring a prominent a very famous solo for the english horn.
