Schmidt Notre Dame

Notre Dame is an opera written by Franz Schmidt, loosely based on Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The opera was written between 1904 and 1906, and the libretto was created by Schmidt himself and Leopold Wilk. Notre Dame was premiered in 1914, and soon its Intermezzo became a popular orchestral piece. Interestingly enough, the Intermezzo was not originally conceived as part of the opera.
