It is a work for piano, violin, and cello, and it has been recognized as one of Mendelssohn's most popular chamber works, toghether with the Octet Op. 20. Upon reviewing the Piano Trio, Rober Schumman declared Mendelssohn "the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most illuminating of musicians."
