Oberon (or The Elf King's Oath) is a romantic opera in 3 acts with music by Carl Maria von Weber and English libretto by James Robinson Planche (based on 'Oberon', a German poem by Christoph Martin Wieland, in turn based on the epic French romance Huon de Bordeaux). The opera was composed between the years 1825 and 1826, first performed in April 1826. It appeared in print in 1826 (only the vocal score): the full score would not be published until 1874. Oberon is usually catalogued as J. 306 according to the Jähns catalogue of von Weber works. The opera was commisioned by the actor-impresario Charles Kemble, who gave von Weber the possibility to choose between Faust and Oberon. The pressure of rehearsals, social engagements and composing extra numbers apparently destroyed von Weber's health, and he died in London on 5 June 1826.
