The story of Glen Prillaman is one of an unremarkable individual who through the grace of God and some outstanding piano teachers--developed piano skills far beyond what would seem possible for someone of his socioeconomic group. Glen began piano lessons at age eight. He was fortunate to have Gwen Beck as his piano teacher. Educated at Elon College (now Elon University), she taught using the forward-looking Robert Pace Music for Piano series when most teachers were still using John Thompson. She even took her students to Elon to demonstrate for the Piano Pedagogy Class. She took her students to Music Camp at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill--where Glen fell in love with the Music Department there. After four years, her husband was transferred. She made sure her piano students had the best teacher--so she placed them with Elizabeth Cobb. Elizabeth Cobb was a tremendous piano teacher that introduced Glen to the classics. Her mother, Sarah Sanborn DeMerritt Robbins, was the wife of an Army officer and a concert pianist. She performed widely wherever they were stationed--from Maine to Boston to New York to Virginia to Honolulu to Rhode Island. Whenever she was in town, she provided a Master Class for Glen. After high school, Glen attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill through the generosity of the James M. Johnston Scholarship Program. There he had the great fortunate to study with Mr. Francis Whang--a remarkable pianist and tremendous piano teacher--who had studied with Rosina Lhevinne at Juilliard. Following Chapel Hill, God led Glen in a radical new direction. He received a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Virginia. At Fort Bragg, he was hired as a Master Planner, became Chief of the Master Planning Branch in 1985 and became Chief of the Master Planning Division in 1996. In the past 30 years, Fort Bragg has experienced enormous change--growing from 21 Million Square Feet to more than 42 Million Square Feet. Despite a very heavy workload, Glen always maintained his passion for music. He served as a church pianist for almost 20 years. He has also accompanied his son Aaron Prillaman at Appalachian State University recitals while he was a student there. Glen gave a few piano recitals and currently is studying piano at the Snyder Music Academy with Jesse Davis. Jesse is another outstanding teacher who received his Masters from Furman and has performed widely in Europe and the United States.
