John Banister was an English composer. He was a violinist in the King's Music from 1660 until his death and from 1672 was host to some of the earliest public concerts recorded. As a composer he was most important for instrumental works, including grounds and dance movements; he also wrote songs for the Davenant-DrydenTempest (1667) and other productions. His son John (d ?1725), who succeeded him in the King's Musick, was active in public concerts and composed small-scale works.
