Calkin, GeorgeYoungest of 8 children born to James and VictoireGeorge was a well-known organist, cellist, choral conductor and prolific composer for the organ, including 16 books of organ voluntaries.1841 census has George (aged 11) living with his parents.The Royal Society of Musicians records the following entry dated - 1st August 1852 : "George plays violincello and is engaged at, the Royal Opera, the Philharmonic Concerts and at Drury Lane theatre. He also plays organ at St. Mark's temporary church."1861 Census - Occupation = "Professor of Music". living at 23, Mornington Crescent, Regents Park, Pancras with his wife Emily, sons George (Lance) and Harry and three other people. (Son Percival was with his grandparents on census night see Robert Riviere (below) and on Percival's own webpage) The other three people listed in the 1861 census are: Eliza Read a boarder, aged 42, occupation of "Fundholder", Caroline Archea a house servant from Suffolk aged 23, and Eliza S. Grapee a house maid from London aged 25.The London Gazette of 4th September 1868 reports that George Calkin, of Mornington Crescent, registered a patent in the county of Middlesex,for the invention of "a new instrument or apparatus for attaching to pianofortes in order to facilitate the study of the notes".1871 census has George, his wife and five of his sons living at 23, Mornington Crescent, Regents Park, Pancras. living at 14, Mornington Crescent, Regents Park, Pancras. 1871 occupation states, "Professor of Music". The other three people listed in the 1871 census are: Francis Smith (70) a Nurse from "London City", Maryann J. Cuthbert (30) a servant from Holloway, and Eliza Glass a servant from St. Pancras aged 18.1881 Census - Occupation = "Professor of Music". with an address of 47, Gloucester Road, London.George's home addresses as listed in Historical Directories include:1882 George's address is still given as 47, Gloucester Road N.W.1895 He now lives at 26, King Henry's Road, Hampstead N.W.1901 Census - Occupation = "Professor of Music (Retired)". Living at 26, King Henry's Road, Hampstead, London, with his wife and two unmarried children. Incidentally, the 1901 census also includes two servants, Mary E. Sutton (b.1851) - cook, and Florence J. Kearsley (b.1883) - Housemaid.1911 Census - Occupation = "Professor of Music (Retired)". Living at 110, King Henry's Road, Primrose Hill, Hampstead, London, with his wife and two unmarried children. Incidentally, the 1911 census also includes two servants, Mary Ann Isaac (b.1872) - cook from Camden Town Ellen Esther Whybrow (b.1894) - Housemaid from Hampstead. George is buried at Highgate Cemetery (as is his brother John Baptiste).
